If you want to get the family away from iPods, iPads and other electronic devices, then an afternoon spent picnicking at Silvan Dam may be the perfect solution.

Silvan Reservoir Park has two parking areas, an upper and lower. The upper car park provides a view of the dam, however it is not possible to walk along the wall as you can at Maroondah Dam. The lower car park is flat and family friendly with BBQs (wood is supplied), picnic tables, playground and plenty of space for large groups to run, frolic and play ball games.

There are a number of walking tracks that take you through the impressive eucalyptus forests surrounding the dam. We took a walk along the Grey Gum Gully track (watch the video to see it). It’s an easy walk with good paths and a few ups and downs to get the heart rate up.

At peak times the park is very popular, so if you don’t like crowds it’s best to avoid main public holidays. However, if you like the atmosphere of a park packed with happy picnickers, then go for it!
