Explore the unique history and heritage of the Yarra Valley.
If you like country gardens with gorgeous views, enjoy history and the opportunity to chat with locals, then you should plan a visit to Mont De Lancey historic homestead. It is Wandin’s earliest brick homestead and its gorgeous gardens have been fully restored. You can even meet some of the descendants of the pioneer families who will bring local history alive as you tour this award-winning heritage attraction.
Located in Wandin, Victoria, Australia, Mont De Lancey Historical Home and Museum features an historic home and 1880’s slab kitchen, museum, gardens, heritage education centre and blacksmiths’ shop.
Mont De Lancey is open from 10am to 4:30pm from Wednesday to Sunday.
Address: 71 Wellington Rd, Wandin North VIC 3139
Ph: (03) 5964 2088
As well as the homestead, Mont De Lancey is host to a blacksmithing group who meet every weekend at the authentic blacksmith shop. Their aim is to keep this ancient craft alive by sharing their knowledge and skills. According to Fritz, a blacksmith of 50 years, blacksmithing is “very therapeutic”. For those interested in this type of therapy, they offer a four-week course and no experience is necessary. Let’s face it, with modern life being so stressful, the opportunity to belt the living daylights out of a bit of hot metal with a hammer for a few hours may just be what the psychiatrist ordered!
On the second Saturday of every month Mont De Lancey holds a unique country market. Containing around 20 stalls, it doesn’t have the scale of the Healesville Craft Market, however the goods on offer are top quality and the setting and atmosphere make this market well worth putting on your list.
As well as the market stalls, there are pony rides, face painting and blacksmith and wood turning demonstrations.
